About Loblaws

Loblaws

Theodore Pringle Loblaw opened his first self-serve grocery store in Toronto in 1919, introducing a concept that was revolutionary at the time: customers could browse the aisles and select their own products instead of handing a list to a clerk behind a counter. That innovation launched what would become Canada's largest food retailer. Today, Loblaw Companies Limited operates over 2,400 stores across the country under more than 20 banners and employs over 200,000 people.

The Loblaw Empire

The Loblaws banner is just one piece of a massive retail ecosystem. The parent company, Loblaw Companies Limited, also operates Real Canadian Superstore, No Frills, Shoppers Drug Mart, T&T Supermarket, Maxi, Provigo, Valu-mart, and several other regional grocery chains. The Weston family, through George Weston Limited, controls the company. This sprawling network gives Loblaw an unmatched presence in Canadian retail, touching virtually every community from coast to coast.

President's Choice and No Name

Two of Canada's most recognizable private-label brands belong to Loblaw. President's Choice, launched in 1984 under the leadership of Dave Nichol, broke the perception that store brands were inferior. The PC Decadent Chocolate Chip Cookie became a cultural touchstone, and the line now spans thousands of products across food, home, and personal care. No Name, with its distinctive yellow packaging and bold black text, takes the opposite approach: no-frills products at the lowest possible price. Together, these two brands give Loblaw a pricing strategy that covers both value-conscious and quality-seeking shoppers.

PC Optimum and Financial Services

Loblaw's PC Optimum loyalty program, which merged the former PC Plus and Shoppers Optimum programs, is one of Canada's largest rewards programs with over 16 million active members. The company also operates PC Financial, offering no-fee banking products and the PC Money credit card that earns points on every purchase. Headquartered in Brampton, Ontario, Loblaw has evolved from a single grocery store into a retail, pharmacy, and financial services conglomerate that touches Canadian daily life in ways few other companies can match.
